King Oyster Mycelium – Pre-Colonised Agar petri Dishes

King Oyster Mycelium โ€“ Pre-Colonised agar petri dishes ready for you to use or clone. King Oyster mushrooms are one of the easier types of mushrooms to grow at home, and they are also valued for their great taste, which is probably why you want to grow them. The live mycelium growing on our petri dishes is what you need to get started – to grow mushrooms of any sort you need live mycelium, either in the form of Mycelium Liquid Culture or, in this case, agar petri dishes already colonised with live mycelium.

This listing is for one colonised 90mm agar plate with live King Oyster mycelium, sealed with parafilm to keep the contents sterile. Our colonised agar plates are ideal for use either for cloning (using snippets of colonised agar to inoculate fresh agar) or for inoculating your suitable spawn/substrate materials. Once the mycelium has covered the whole surface of the petri dish it is ready for immediate use.

Please note that colonised agar should be kept in a cool dark place until it is ready to be used. It helps if it can be left at room temperature for 24 hours prior to use. King Oyster Mycelium, like any live mycelium, should not be allowed to drop below 3 Celcius as this can kill it.

Agar petri dishes (colonised or not) should only be opened in sterile air, and so should be handled only in a protective environment such as a still air box or, ideally, in front of a laminar flow hood. Never touch the agar/mycelium with anything that has not been properly sterilised. Blades or other tools used to slice or extract the agar should be flame sterilised before use. Partially used petri dishes containing agar should be sealed with fresh parafilm – the original parafilm should not be re-used. Regardless, we recommend using your colonised agar within a week if possible, to avoid it drying out or over-growing.

To reduce the chance of a heavy build-up of condensation inside petri dishes, they are best stored upside down. Condensation in itself is more or less inevitable, and won’t damage the mycelium, but puddles of water inside the petri dish can increase the risk of contamination when opened.

When working with agar, either while doing agar to grain inoculation or agar to agar transfers be sure that you are familiar with and follow strict sterile working techniques.

Note: The product image used is generic and for display purposes only. Appearance of mycelium varies from species to species.
