Buna Shimeji Mycelium – Pre-Colonised Agar petri Dishes

Buna Shimeji Mycelium – Pre-Colonised agar petri dishes ready for you to use or clone. Shimejis are also known as beech mushrooms and have a firm, chewy texture, with a savory nutty flavour, allied to a hint of sweetness. Typically, they’re used in stir-frys, soups, and as a side dish with roast meat. They’re also used in hot pots, rice and noodle dishes, and tempura dishes and sauces.

To grow mushrooms of any sort you need live mycelium, either in the form of Mycelium Liquid Culture or agar colonised with live mycelium. To grow these mushrooms you need to use the right substrate, and a hardwood sawdust based substrate is best. They need to be grown in a breathable environment – many growers use glass (or other) jars with an air-exchange hole in the jar lid. Note that the sterilization of jars is a non-negotiable step in the growing process.

This listing is for one colonised 90mm agar plate with live Shimeji mushroom mycelium, sealed with parafilm to keep the contents sterile. Our colonised agar plates are ideal for use either for cloning to make more colonised agar, or to inoculate your spawn materials. Once the mycelium has covered the whole surface of the petri dish it is ready for immediate use.

Colonised agar needs to be kept in a cool dark place until you are ready to use it. A fridghe is fine, but away from freezer compartments as Shimeji mushroom mycelium, like any live mycelium, is likely to be killed in temperatures below 3 Celcius.

Buna Shimeji Mycelium agar petri dishes should only be opened in sterile air, and handled in a protected environment such as a still air box or, ideally, in front of a laminar flow hood. Never touch the agar/mycelium with anything that has not been properly sterilised. Blades used to slice or extract the agar should be flame sterilised before use. Partially used petri dishes containing agar can be re-sealed with fresh strips of parafilm – the original parafilm should not be re-used. We recommend using your colonised agar within a week if possible, to avoid it drying out or over-growing.

To reduce the chance of a heavy build-up of condensation inside petri dishes, they are best stored upside down. If you have more than one, stack them up, as this helps keep them all at the same temperature. Condensation is common and won’t damage the mycelium, but rivers of water in the petri dish can increase the risk of contamination when opened.

When working with agar, either while doing agar to grain inoculation or agar to agar transfers be sure that you are familiar with and follow strict sterile working techniques.

Note: The product image used is generic and for display purposes only. Appearance of mycelium varies from species to species.
