Description

Enoki (Flammulina filiformis) Mushroom Liquid Culture Luer Syringe with sterile 16g needle.

Enoki Mushrooms have long been popular with those growing their mushrooms at home, not least thanks to their delicious taste! Enoki mushrooms (Flammulina velutipes) are highly regarded in Japan where it’s called Enokitake or Enoki and is a popular ingredient for soups, but can be used for salads and other dishes.
Liquid culture (mycelium) is generally the best way to inoculate grain spawn as it is more efficient than spore syringes or agar wedge techniques. Liquid culture mycelium can be more evenly distributed in the grain bag/jar, resulting in more rapid colonization.

Our Enoki liquid culture (different sizes available) is supplied in Luer syringes.

Liquid culture should be stored in a fridge (but never frozen) until ready for use. Provided it is properly looked after and sterile working practices are followed, it should remain usable for several months. Your Enoki liquid culture can be used in various ways:

  • To inoculate grain or other spawn material in order to start mycelium colonisation
  • To inoculate fresh liquid culture supplies (so you can reproduce the culture)
  • To inoculate agar dishes

STERILE WORKING PRACTICES

Sterile procedures are very important when adding either liquid culture or spores to grain or any other growth medium as it is very easy to create contamination. It’s a constant hazard. That’s why 90% of information found online relating to growing mushrooms at home talks about contamination and how to avoid it!  So, regardless of how you plan to use this liquid culture, be sure to read up on correct sterile working techniques before you start. As a minimum you should clean your hands, your working area, your grow bags or container, any injection ports and anything else you or your syringe needle might touch with 70% alcohol – available at very low prices on sites like amazon. It only takes a few minutes but 99% of all contaminations occurring during mushroom production are caused by lapses in sterile techniques.

You should also be sure that you are using the right type of grain/substrates for the mushroom type you wish to grow and what conditions are required during incubation and fruiting stages. All these factors will have an effect on the quality of the final mushrooms you grow.

Above all, remember that patience is essential when growing mushrooms at home!
